Damian & Ed day 2 Mabel Lake

Tuesday was forecast to be a 30 degree C day, hot and dry.

The plan - get up early, grab a quick breakfast and head out the door for 8:00am. We had made sandwiches last evening and put them and few snacks with lots of water bottles in our packs. We were heading for Enderby Cliffs and were at the trail head at 8:30am - already it was getting very warm and the sun was high in the sky. The water was heavy but we needed every drop of it. The assent trail is mostly switchbacks through forest and as we got higher the undergrowth became more sparse and the heat was able to penetrate.
Ed & the boys
Ed's workmate Dave invited Skyler, the son of a neighbour, to join us and both of the boys hit it off right away. It was hard to keep up with them - they are so fit and full of energy. They were jumping over logs and boulders and looking for wild life. Red squirrels are very common in this area and many were spotted. Seen less often are garter snakes but the boys were able to spot two of these quick slitherers.

On our return to Dave's place we immediately changed into bathers and took a welcome dip in the lake - very cool and refreshing. After swimming, Damian & Ed were treated to a spin around the lake in a power boat. We were both offered the opportunity to try water skiing - we both said thanks but no thank you - we need our legs for the rest of the week.
Later in the afternoon there was a torrential downpour which lasted for an hour or more. The air cooled very quickly and after another barbecue we were able to sleep very comfortably.
Tomorrow will be another early start as we need to hit the road for our campsite at Lake Louise village.
The saga will be continued - zzzzzzzzz.
